Builders
Removal of Door Frames
Depending on the opening size, some builders require us to work with the lift company to recut the opening with a concrete saw to the specific dimensions. On other jobs simply knocking out the old door frames to install new ones is sufficient.
Strip the Shaft Clean
Once the lift power is turned our Team will go in and rip out all car rails, counter weight rails, counter weight, conduit pipes, old electrical wiring, shaft lights all the way down the shaft. Removing rails, brackets and anything else which doesn’t need to be there for the new install. This also includes clearing out all pit gear.
Installation of Lifting Beams/Eyes
Some lift companies when installing new lifts need something to hang off in the top of the shaft. We will supply, install and work with these companies placing these beams as per the drawings. They will then be certified by a structural engineer to meet building compliance.
Provide and Install Lockable Hoardings
For Safety, Every lift door opening must be made safe until completed lift door and lift door frame are installed. We can provide these made to measure for the duration of the project. After the rip out process keys will be handed over to the Project Manager on site. These lock up hoardings are made from either timber or Melamine and can be painted to suit the client goals.
Motor Room Stripping
We strip down and remove and the entire room leaving it clean. Removing the Lift Motor, Controllers, Oli, Governor, Bed plates, Machine beams, Electrical wiring and troffing etc. Hatch access is utilised to winch down the entire machine and remove.
Floor Protection
On each job with work in and around the door frames things can get damaged – we like to provide as part of our service protection to cover any tiles, carpet or finishing.
Electrical Work
All Electrical work is done by another electrical contractor. Before we turn off the shift shaft is required we can run the mains and telephone line to the top of the shaft co-ordinating with the Lift company. Then turn the power off in the Lift shaft ready to be removed.
Remedial Work
When the door frames have be removed and new frames installed by the Lift company there will be a rough opening between the frames and original wall. We will make good the wall and fire rate by grouting in and painting if needed. Occasionally tiles at the foot of the opening may need replacing, We can take care of all this for you if requested.
Scaffolding
Occasionally the lift is jammed or stuck at the bottom so we can scaffold up and remove the entire lift equipment this way.
Lift Removal
Since 2011 ERS has removed over 240+ lift and a total 1730+ floors. With that amount of lifts successfully removed and the experience gained as a Team we have created a best in class methodology of the highest standards. Partnering with the best teams is Australia removing all types of Lifts. Each lift and project presents its own challenges. Depending on the type of lift overhead traction, underslung or hydraulic ram lift – during the project planning stage we will discuss our methodology, process and site requirements.
Safe Work Method Statement
Over the past 13+ years ERS has worked with the best times across the country, completing SWMS training and worked through all types of challenges, hazards and problems as these projects take place. All these lessons from Lift Companies, Tier 1 Builders, Tunnelling teams, Demolition Companies, to the Mines, military and special government projects all come together in our best in class removal methodologies. Prior to projects we arrange high risk works shops to run over scenarios and ensure all teams are on the same page. Throughout projects our Site managers are in constant communication and interfacing with other trades onsite with daily pre starts and subbie meetings.
Motor Room Removal
Our team will dismantle and remove the motor room equipment. Remove plinths and where required for tricky access motor rooms with no hatch or lifting beams our riggers will install lifting points and take gear down the fire stairs if required.
Door Frames Removal
Depending if the scope required and generally dedicated by the builder or lift company the door frames are critical part of the removal process. we will cut/remove the door frames, headers and sills if required. Hoardings will be required door/frames be removed. Alternatively if the doors can be recladded our team will keep the doors/frames in place.
Pit Cleaning – Removing Combustibles
Working with hotworks each and every project – One of the first jobs is to ensure the pit is clean and cleared of dust, rubbish and combustibles to ensure there are no spot/pit fires. This can also sometimes mean soaking up or pumping out any oil then degreasing the pit prior to starting the removal.
Insurances
ERS holds Public Liability insurance of $20Million and Workers Compensation for all projects. Certificates of currency to be sent over with safety documentation during the early planning stages.
Certified Lifting Beams
The ERS team have 13+ years experience installing certified Lifting beams. All designs and fabrication is signed off by our structural engineer Paul Tinsley.
Certified Working/Protection Decks
The ERS team have 13+ years experience installing certified Working and Crash decks for lift companies, Builders and Demo companies. These deck designs are signed off and built to engineering requirements. Usually installed level with the top landing or where required.
Oil Removal
ERS engages specialists Oil removal contractors who will pump the oil from the Hydralulic tanks, lift pits and where required. They will then degrease and clean whats required. Once the Oil has been removed offsite its then recycled and certification is supplied and can be passed onto the client.
Extractor Fans/Dust Control
Where required the ERS team will install extraction fans with ducts usually sucking the fumes and dust from the lift shaft. This is particularly useless on sensitive projects or live environments.
Hospitals
ERS has completed lift removal projects across 15 of the NSW Hospitals. Due to the unique surroundings and sensitive live environment this makes removing a lift very challenging. At intensese pre start planning process to review the methodology, disruption notices, the best path to exit while ensure minimal disruption to the day to day operations of the hospital.
Mine Sites
The ERS team have successfully completed 1 weeks onsite training for Mt Isa Mines and Medicals. Understanding how to work on these hostile projects including full face respirators, gas monitors and confined space training and thermal camera firewatch and working in with the onsite teams at their standards.
Tier 1 Construction
With 13+ years of ERS working along side Australias Tier 1 Construction Companies on the major sites around the country is a testament to the standards set and performance completed by the Ripout team to deliver project after project.
Dump Waiter Removal
Similar to a lift in many ways our team will use most of the same methodologies we have created over the years to expertly dismantle and remove these dumbwaiters. Usually in sensitive environments like schools, restaurants and hospitals.
Decommissioning of Elevator/Make Safe
Occacianly ERS is requested to decommission or make safe an Elevator. We will rig up the lift car, safely land the counterweight and lift car into the pit and confirm zero energy. Examples might be the lift is no longer required or a builder/demo company would like us to remove the potential energy hazard prior to demolising the building.
Redundant material removed/recycled from site
Once ERS has stripped the redundant lift material from the lift shaft using a trolley onsite we will remove the gear from site via skip, ute or truck pending access.
Asbestos Situations – Assist with samples/testing to limit downtime
From time to time over the past decade due to the nature of the older buildings and existing redundant lift since trained if the team come across anything that looks slightly suspicious. Tools down, stop work and call the site manager. ERS can assist with getting samples tested for Asbestos with results back usually same day.
Floor/wall protection
Most lift removals are completed in a live building. During the initial mobilisation stage ERS will install 3mm MDF ply down on the floors to protect the area. This usually includes the lift lobbies, path to exit and builders lift. Where required the team will also ensure walls are protected prior to removal.
Zip Walls – Sensitive Environments
Not required on every projects only the very senestivie ones such as kitchens or hospitals where dust/fumes must be kept to near zero. ERS will install a zipwall outside the hoarding to act as another lay of protection and reduce the disruption to tenants/clients.
Special Projects
Over the years our specialised team have completed lift removals in the Mines, Hospitals, Navy bases, the Reseve bank vaults, Police stations, Court houses, Federal police building. Special NV1 Clearance were required and help by senior staff members. We have also completed removals from overhead cranes inside dams from manboxes and from Boom lifts where access was restricted. Never the easiest of projects but the team embrace and live for the challenge.
National Project Capabilities
Due to the agile team nature ERS can deploy into regional or other states. Larger projects we would send a stock box full of gear ahead of us and fly in, hire utes and mobilise to site. From regional NSW, Melbourne, Gladstone, Brisbane, Mt Isa to Canberra, Wollongong and Newcastle. Our teams fly in get it done and hand it back as soon as possible.
Engineer certification – Paul Tinsley
Paul Tinsley has been our structural engineer since the early years he inspects and provides the drawings and calculations for all our Lifting beams and working decks.
Concrete Cutting/wall Scanning
ERS has worked with the same concrete cutting company for the past decade. Our companies work together to set up black plastic, secure the area, install ventilation fans where required. We would set up and traveling exclusion zone on each floor and scan the walls prior to cutting. Generally ERS would have a few team members assisting with clean up and slurry control. Where possible we try to do the cutting from the top of the lift car to keep disruption, noise and water within the shaft. Once all cutting is complete ERS will dispose of all the concrete and clean down the floors.
Pre Start inspection/Dilapidation Reports
During the Mobilisation stage ERS will conduct a walkthrough of the project and any existing damage. During this time we will discuss the path to exit, lay down and methodology with the client and any disruption notices to be arranged.
High Risk Workshops & Project Planning
High risk workshops have become a critical part of our operation and driver for project/company success. Noone knows their site better than the client/principle contract so working in with them and how best to work together. Educating on the lift removal process, hazard present and how we mitigate the danger/risk through the control measures put in place.
Weekly Contractors Progress Meetings
On larger projects where we interface with multiple parties all working on different parts of the site ERS will attend these meetings to ensure everyone is on the same page working safely in and around each other.
Daily Updates/Reporting/WhatsApp
During the pre project planning stage ERS will create a Lift Removal Project whatsapp group for all key personnel. Here our team will provide daily updates and upload photos and create open communication between all parties.

Not often but important to learn from the handful of incidents over the years are always documents, reviewed and discussed as a team how to remoe the hazard/danger and the best path forward to ensure it doesnt happen again and we all get home safe to our families. No project is worth getting hurt.
Onsite Project Manager – single point of contact
Site Managers – what we have found over the years and the frustrations of working with other teams and multiple managers on and off the project is the disconnect. Over the past decade we now have a single point of contact for each project who will provide daily updates, photos and progress reports to keep all parties on the same page and the highest communication standards. We also expect this from the teams we work with.
Lifting & Tagging Registers
Although most of our gear is battery-operated these days we still ensure charging stations and other onsite powered lead tools are checked and tagged as required.
Certified Lifting Plans
For the more complex projects ERS engages lifting companies to come up with a certified lifting plan where required.
